The Chase is On! Toyota Camry in the Sprint Cup
The Sprint Cup, NASCAR’s playoff round, begins on Sunday in Loudon, N.H. The format for the Chase is simple enough: 10 races contested over 10 weeks on a variety of short, intermediate-length and superspeedway tracks. Two of the hottest drivers are in Toyota Camrys. This includes No. 11 FedEx driver Denny Hamlin and No. 83 Red Bull driver, Brian Vicker. A bulk of racers were already eliminated: to make the Chase drivers had to finish NASCAR’s 26-race regular season in the top 12 in points. All 12 drivers will begin the Chase with 5,000 points plus 10 bonus points for every race they won during the regular season.
Camry driver Denny Hamlin begins the Chase with 5,020 points and Vickers with 5,010. Whoever ends the 10-race Chase with the most points will be crowned the series champion at Homestead-Miami (Fla.) Speedway in mid-November. This time of year in the racing world, it’s all about putting together 10 consistent — and good — finishes. Hamlin capped off NASCAR’s regular season with a dominating victory at Richmond International Raceway Sept. 12, where he led 299 of 400 laps to score his first victory on his home track. In his last five races he earned more points than any other driver in the Sprint Cup Series. Vickers has gotten seven top-10s in the last nine races and no finish worse than 12th. Whichever Toyota driver comes out on top, the Chase will certainly be an exciting series.
