Used but Safe
Toyota Safety
When shopping for a used car, one of the major concerns is safety, especially if the vehicle will be transporting your children around. Consumers worry that, because older cars do not have the most modern stat-of-the-art safety technology, they will not protect themselves and their family in the event of a crash. If a used vehicle is from the past decade, though, it is likely to have at least some modern features. Still, some models are safer than others. Here are two top picks in their categories:
The 2004 Toyota Celica: the Celica is one of the safest used coupes you can find. It has a very low chance of rollover at %9, and it front driver crash rating got four stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Furthermore, it is front wheel drive, so it is less likely to be involved in the type of rear-drive spin some sporty vehicles are involved in, yet it still has a sporty coupe shape.
The 2004 Toyota Camry is one of the safest used mid-sized sedans available. It got a frontal driver crash rating of five stars from the NHTS and has a comparatively low rollover rating of 11%. The Camry, the best selling Sedan in the U.S., has a long history of reliability and safety.
If safety is a top priority when selecting a used car, look for one that is a more recent model. Look at safety ratings put out by, both, Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and NHTSA. And, lastly, ask around and read reviews; automakers, such as Toyota have a good reputation for making safe vehicles, and the only way to get this reputation is to earn it.
