Toyota Reaches #1

Japan's Toyota Motor Corp. sold more cars and trucks last year than General Motors Corp., making the automaker No. 1 in global sales.  Toyota announced they sold 8.972 million cars and trucks in 2008, about 616,000 vehicles ahead of GM.  Toyota has been catching up with GM in the last few years, so this is no surprise.  However, Toyota's overall global sales fell 4 percent for the year, marking that automaker's first decline in a decade and production has been cut in both North America and Japan in order to deal with the slowing consumer demand.  How long Toyota will hold the top spot, no one knows; it all depends how long it takes the U.S. and European markets to recover.  Until then, Toyota will continue to do what they can to stay at the top of the market.
