Another Step Towards Tire Efficiency
There is so much information today about anything that can give a vehicle better fuel efficiency. We hear about having correct tire pressure often. Yet, there is another, less publicized option – using low-rolling-resistance tires. The Toyota Prius uses these as a key component in the overall system that makes hybrid vehicles so fuel efficient.
New vehicles often specify low-rolling-resistance (LRR) tires as original equipment to enhance performance in fuel-economy tests. However, replacement tires generally have all-season grip and longer tread life, as opposed to optimal rolling resistance. When it comes time to replace the factory-fitted tires on your vehicle, consider opting for a LRR tire.
Proper inflation pressure is still important for optimum fuel economy and long tire life, but rolling resistance can add or detract an additional one or two miles per gallon. In general, you don’t have to pay more to get a tire with better rolling resistance. The reward for replacing a worn, less-optimum tire could be more than $100 in annual fuel savings. So, it only makes sense to consider every aspect of the tire.
Getting the most from your tires is an easy, sensible task. Keep your tires properly inflated, check inflation pressure at least monthly, when the tires are cool, and replace factory tires with ones that are rated with a low rolling resistance. You can find these ratings at Consumer Reports.
In this day and time, with fuel prices soaring, it is an endless quest for better fuel economy. Yet, many overlook the role that tires can play, so next time you are shopping for new tires remember these tips.
